Simply play? Why not?
Most of our children go from class to therapy on a daily basis. Why, you may ask? Because research says if you do 35 to 40 hours of therapy, we can close the gaps. The question remains though- when do our children get to be children? Let them PLAY, have no outcomes for what they are doing.
That’s how we came up with our Free and easy Friday’s. These sessions are meant to be a safe place for our children to explore within their comfort zones. A place and time where they can be introduced to new things by observing or exploring at their own pace.
When we first started this at the center, our little boy Sam, was so lost. He struggled with the lack of structure and with not having an a outcome for the activities he was engaging in. This completely threw him and he became very upset. It took Sam 3 weeks, 3 Sessions to get used to the idea that this was a day for him, for him to explore, for him to determine the outcome not the teacher or therapist.
Sam enjoys his Friday’s now. He is very comfortable with the unstructured time and is able to self regulate now. These sessions have slowly helped Sam to gain independence and boost his self- confidence.
At the end of the day, all we want is for our children to be happy and to be growing and progressing. Sometimes having a free day helps us with that development and growth. It is a great way for children to learn about themselves.
